Some proposals are carefully planned. Some are completely unexpected. And every once in a while, a proposal happens that manages to be both of those things at the exact same time...
Natalie and Janie traveled to San Francisco for a getaway, and Natalie had a very important question she wanted to ask. After plenty of back and forth trying to find the perfect location, Lands End became the destination that neither Natalie nor Janie would forget. With the Pacific Ocean stretching out below them and the Golden Gate Bridge perfectly visible in the distance, it was hard to imagine a more iconic backdrop for such a meaningful moment.
And on this particular day, San Francisco gave them an extra gift: a perfectly clear sky and absolutely no fog in sight.
A Proposal with the Golden Gate Bridge in the Distance
Lands End is one of those iconic places in San Francisco that we truly believe everyone should check out. The rugged coastline, winding trails, crashing waves, and expansive views create a setting that feels wild and dramatic while still being unmistakably connected to the city. Near the Lands End Labyrinth, Natalie found the spot she had been searching for - somewhere beautiful, intimate, and surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes a San Francisco proposal unforgettable.
As they settled into the moment, Natalie asked Janie the question she'd been waiting to ask.
And Janie said yes.
And for a few moments, they simply got to enjoy being newly engaged—taking in the view, celebrating together, and letting the excitement of what had just happened sink in. We were there to photograph the proposal as it unfolded, capturing all of the emotion and excitement that comes with witnessing a couple take such a meaningful step together.
Then Janie revealed that she had a surprise of her own.
Wait... There Was Another Proposal?
Natalie had planned the surprise. Natalie had asked the question. Natalie had the ring.
But Janie wasn't about to let her have all the fun.
In a twist that none of us could have scripted, Janie revealed that she had a ring of her own and turned the tables by proposing right back to Natalie.
Suddenly, what had already been an incredibly meaningful afternoon became something even more extraordinary. Two women, two rings, two proposals, and one very memorable answer to the question of how to celebrate a future together. There was laughter, surprise, happy tears, and the kind of genuine emotion that makes photographing proposals so special. It's impossible to manufacture the kind of magic a moment like that holds. The best photographs come from simply being there when something real happens, and Natalie and Janie's double proposal was about as real (and joyful) as it gets.
A San Francisco Engagement Session to Remember
After both proposals, we spent a little more time exploring Lands End and photographing Natalie and Janie together. These post-proposal portraits felt less like a traditional engagement session and more like a chance to celebrate everything that had just happened.
There was no need to manufacture excitement or pose a perfect version of the day. They were already living in the middle of an incredible moment: newly engaged, surrounded by the San Francisco coastline, and carrying the surprise of not one but two proposals.
That's one of our favorite things about photographing proposals: the story doesn't end when someone gets down on one knee. The moments immediately afterward, the laughter, the hugs, the disbelief, the first looks at the ring, and the realization that everything has just changed, are often some of the most meaningful photographs of the entire experience.
For couples considering a San Francisco proposal, Lands End offers an incredible combination of natural beauty and iconic city views. And while we can't promise a perfectly clear day without fog, we can say that when the Golden Gate Bridge appears in all its glory, there are few places more spectacular to begin an engagement.
